چکیده

We present an electrostatic tactile display for stimulus localization. The 240-Hz electrostatic force was generated by the beat phenomenon in a region where excited X electrodes cross excited Y electrodes, which presents localized tactile sensation out of the entire surface. A 10.4in. visual-tactile integrated display was successfully demonstrated. key words: tactile display, electrostatic force, beat phenomenon, multi touch, user experience

High-Quality Texture Display: The Use of Vibrotactile and Variable-Friction Stimuli in Conjunction

The sliding of a finger on a material surface results in complex physical interactions. Tactile texture displays have been limited in their ability to capture the aspects of these interactions. As a step forward, we have combined two complementary types of tactile stimuli, vibrotactile and electrostatic, to deliver roughness textures with high realism. These two types of stimuli represent the s...

Miniaturised Electrostatic Tactile Display with High Structural Compliance

Tactile displays are used to provide tactile feedback in telemanipulation or virtual reality. One aim in further developments is the miniaturisation of tactile displays for incorporation into dataand/or force feedback gloves. This enables the combination of tactile and kinesthetic feedback. A main disadvantage of many tactile displays with a large number of stimulator elements is their large vo...

Localization of tactile stimuli depends on conscious detection.

Neurological reports of "tactile blindsight" suggest that the human somatosensory system can extract behaviorally useful information about the location of a tactile stimulus in the absence of conscious awareness that the stimulus occurred (Paillard et al., 1983; Rossetti et al., 1995). However, in a series of psychophysical experiments with neurologically intact subjects, we found no evidence f...

A Tactile Palette to Translate Graphics for the Visually Impaired

Spatial haptic displays, such as electrostatic vibration (electrovibration) based friction displays, augment flat panels and surfaces with spatially arranged tactile content. Such devices can be useful for the visually impaired to translate visual images to tactile ones on demand. In this paper, we explore a tactile palette that consisted of a set of six perceptually distinct tactile stimuli co...

Spatiotemporal integration for tactile localization during arm movements: a probabilistic approach.

It has been shown that people make systematic errors in the localization of a brief tactile stimulus that is delivered to the index finger while they are making an arm movement. Here we modeled these spatial errors with a probabilistic approach, assuming that they follow from temporal uncertainty about the occurrence of the stimulus. In the model, this temporal uncertainty converts into a spati...
